In Cambodia, 12 people died after the resumption of military conflict with Thailand
The number of Cambodian civilians killed as a result of the country's armed conflict with Thailand has increased to 12. This was announced on December 15 by Cambodia's Information Minister Net Pheaktra.
It is specified that 74 residents were injured and more than 400 thousand were forced to leave their homes near the border.
"The Thai army used heavy weapons, including fighter jets and cluster bombs," the Khmer Times newspaper quoted him as saying.
According to Pheaktra, over the past nine days, the Thai military has attacked civilian homes, schools, hospitals, temples, as well as urban infrastructure.
On December 8, the Cambodian military opened fire on the Thai Anupong base. In response, the Thai army called on residents of the border areas to evacuate to shelters due to the threat of escalation of the conflict. The next day, fighting between Thailand and Cambodia unfolded along the entire joint border, affecting five regions and hundreds of citizens on both sides.
American leader Donald Trump announced on December 12 that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a cease-fire and respect for the peace agreement concluded earlier. He stressed that both countries are committed to a peaceful settlement and are interested in continuing trade and economic ties with the United States. On December 13, Trump announced that he had succeeded in ending the escalation between Thailand and Cambodia. He added that Washington had done a "good job" with the two countries.
Later, Thai Prime Minister Anuthin Chanvirakun said that the country would continue to fight on the border with Cambodia and would not stop the conflict, after which Trump threatened the countries with the imposition of duties in case of continued fire.
