A live Christmas tree can become a source of insects, mold spores, and allergens that are dangerous to human health, especially those suffering from asthma and allergies. This was announced on December 14 by Maria Zolotareva, Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Biotechnology and Industrial Pharmacy at RTU MIREA.

"Insects, including bark beetles, aphids and some arachnids, often overwinter in the tree bark and in the cracks of the trunk. Although these creatures are not dangerous to humans, their awakening in the warmth of an apartment can lead to an unpleasant neighborhood," she said in an interview withГазета.Ru ".

The expert noted that natural microflora, including mold spores, is present on the surface of the trunk and branches. In the warmth of the apartment, when moisture evaporates from the tree, ideal conditions are created for their reproduction, which can worsen the microclimate and cause allergies.

In addition, essential oils and terpenoids responsible for the coniferous aroma can cause redness of the eyes, itching of the skin and respiratory symptoms, especially in asthmatics, allergy sufferers and young children. According to the expert, microscopic dust particles that irritate the respiratory tract can accumulate on the branches of a live spruce during storage.

To minimize risks, Zolotareva advises buying Christmas trees only at official points with phytosanitary control. Before installing the tree, shake and rinse the trunk and branches with running water. It should be placed in a well-ventilated area where people are not constantly, keep it for no more than 10-12 days, regularly ventilate and maintain humidity of 50-60%. After the holidays, it is recommended to throw away the Christmas tree until the needles completely crumble.

Earlier that day, Alexander Khaminsky, a lawyer and head of the Center for Law Enforcement in Moscow and the Moscow Region, said that unauthorized felling of a Christmas tree is punishable by a fine of up to 500 thousand rubles for a legal entity. For individuals, the fine can reach 5,000 rubles. Its size depends on whether car mechanics, motor vehicles, self-propelled vehicles and other types of equipment were used when cutting down the tree.
