Fico called for the restoration of economic cooperation between Slovakia and Russia
Slovakia needs to restore relations with Russia, and therefore the government of the country will instruct the Slovak Foreign Ministry to restart the work of the commissions on economic cooperation. This was announced on December 13 by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
He expressed confidence that the military conflict in Ukraine would end, and even if Brussels expressed dissatisfaction, Slovakia would not participate in the purchase of weapons for Kiev and further senseless bloodshed.
"I believe that we must restore economic relations with the Russian Federation very quickly. I have already told you that I will ask the Minister of Foreign Affairs to resume the work of the joint commissions," the politician said on the Saturday Dialogues program. The broadcast was carried out on the STVR YouTube channel.
As Fico noted, everyone in Slovakia knows that this issue is not political or ideological, but more about geography.
"Gas from there (from Russia. — ed.) has always been the most profitable for us, and so has oil," the Prime Minister said.
On the same day, Fico criticized the position of a number of EU countries on the conflict in Ukraine. He said that Slovakia does not want to be part of Western Europe, for which, in his words, "the lives of Russians and Ukrainians mean nothing." The Prime Minister stressed that the country would not support the EU's plans to transfer frozen Russian assets to Ukraine's military needs.
Earlier, on December 9, it was reported that Fico announced his intention to speak at the EU summit against steps that could lead to a prolongation of the conflict in Ukraine. He also stressed that Slovakia is preparing a complaint against the European Commission over the suspension of Russian gas supplies and is forming a position aimed at protecting national interests.
