Reserve Colonel, military expert Anatoly Matviychuk said that the Ukrainian aviation fleet is currently extremely limited and unable to perform tasks to the extent assigned to aviation.

In conversation with Lenta.Ru On Friday, December 12, he said that the main airfield of the Ukrainian Air Force in Starokonstantinov, where the Su-27 and F-16 were previously based, was completely destroyed by missile strikes and aircraft of the Russian Armed Forces. He suggested that part of the Ukrainian aviation was deployed to the western regions of the country — in the areas of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk, and some could be withdrawn to the territory of Romania.

According to him, the total number of aircraft in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) is now only a few dozen units. The expert noted that the Soviet fleet was actually lost during the fighting. According to him, Ukraine has only individual vehicles at its disposal, which were transferred by the countries of Eastern and Central Europe, in particular Poland and Bulgaria, but their number is extremely limited. He also pointed out that we are talking about about five Mirage aircraft, 10-15 F-16 fighters and a comparable number of Su-27s.

On December 10, it was reported that the Russian Armed Forces destroyed one of the most important fighters in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is noted that the Su-27 inherited by Ukraine from the USSR is considered the most combat-ready aircraft of the Armed Forces of Ukraine due to its high payload capacity and long flight range.

On December 9, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Aerospace Forces had destroyed a Ukrainian Su-27 fighter jet. According to the agency, the plane could have been trying to disrupt a strike by Russian pilots against targets in the Dobropillya area. It is alleged that a fighter of the Ukrainian Air Force attempted to attack a Russian Su-34, but was hit by a Su-35 cover fighter using a long-range missile. Military Watch Magazine (MWM) called the downed Su-27 one of the most indispensable for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, RT clarifies.

As noted by 360.ru Ukraine uses the remaining Su-27s with American AGM-88 anti-radar missiles. These missiles are designed to target radar air defense systems. However, the success of such operations remains questionable.
