New Year's holidays are traditionally perceived as a time of rest and celebration, but they often become a serious challenge for the body. A change in daily routine, an abundance of fatty foods and alcohol consumption can affect not only well-being, but also the sexual sphere. Vera Seryozhina, an expert at the LabQuest medical company, told Izvestia on December 19 why libido decreases for many after a long weekend and how to minimize the effects of holiday overloads.

According to her, one of the main factors is the disruption of the usual rhythm of life. Disturbed sleep, late dinners, and decreased physical activity affect the functioning of the nervous and endocrine systems.

"In women, the hormonal balance is particularly sensitive to such changes. Against the background of a violation of the usual lifestyle, the work of the ovaries may change, which sometimes leads to disruptions of the menstrual cycle, including delays. In such situations, anxiety about a possible pregnancy often arises, although the reason for the changes is often physiological in nature and is associated precisely with the festive load on the body," the doctor said.

Festive excesses also have a noticeable effect. Alcohol and fatty foods overload the liver, an organ involved in the metabolism of sex hormones. When her work is disrupted, the synthesis and utilization of hormones changes, which affects both sexual desire and reproductive function. Seryozhina added that in men, decreased libido is especially often associated with alcohol, which temporarily reduces testosterone levels and worsens sperm quality. Regular alcohol consumption during the holidays can reduce reproductive potential for several weeks.

In addition, there is a widespread belief that nine months after the New Year holidays, there is a surge in the birth rate. Experts confirm that there is such a trend, however, they emphasize that the figures could have been higher if the holidays had not been accompanied by alcohol intoxication and body overload. Excessive food and alcohol negatively affect not only the reproductive system, but also the general state of health, which reduces the likelihood of successful conception.

An additional factor is the load on the cardiovascular system, the doctor said. Festive activity, especially against the background of lack of sleep and overeating, worsens blood circulation. It can also affect the quality of intimate life. At the same time, moderate sexual activity, on the contrary, supports the blood supply to internal organs and improves overall tone.

"If libido has decreased, then it is worthwhile to undergo a blood test for special hormonal complexes, which include sex hormones, thyroid gland, adrenal glands and other factors that stimulate hormone production. It is quite possible to maintain harmony in intimate life even during long weekends. To do this, it is enough to observe moderation in diet, control the amount of alcohol, do not sacrifice sleep and maintain at least minimal physical activity," the specialist concluded.

On December 5, Medical Xpress magazine reported that the New Year provides an excellent opportunity to restart the diet and return to healthy eating habits after the holidays. The leftovers of the festive meal do not have to be thrown away immediately, they can be consumed gradually and in small portions. Nutritionist Andrea Delgado noted that it is necessary to gradually return to previous healthier habits or develop new ones. Start including vegetables and fruits in most meals.
