A new study has shown that almost two thirds of modern dog breeds carry traces of wolf DNA, which could influence their size, behavior and adaptation to the environment. This was reported in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

The scientists analyzed 2,693 genomes of dogs and wolves to study the legacy of wolf genes after domestication. It turned out that 64% of modern dog breeds contain a small amount of wolf DNA, whereas all free-living village dogs have a much higher proportion.

"Our data show how even a low level of genetic exchange between dogs and wolves shaped modern breeds, regardless of their origin," said the study's lead author Audrey Lin, her words are quoted in the journal New Atlas.

Wolf genes are associated with traits such as the size, function, and character of a dog. The breeds with the most wolf DNA — Czechoslovakian and Saarlouian Wolfhounds — had 23-40% wolf genetics. Among the common breeds, the Anglo-French hounds (5.7%) and Shiloh Sherpas (2.7%) have the highest wolf inheritance. Even small breeds, including Chihuahuas, show minimal traces of wolf DNA — about 0.2%.

A comparison of genetic data with breed characteristics showed a correlation between wolf inheritance and behavior: breeds with a high content of wolf DNA are more often described as distrustful of strangers, independent and territorial. Breeds with a low content of wolf genes, on the contrary, are more often considered friendly, affectionate and energetic. The scientists emphasized that this is only a correlation and it requires further research.

Interestingly, large guard breeds, including the Neapolitan Mastiff, Bullmastiff and St. Bernard, do not have noticeable traces of wolf DNA, while some small breeds retain minimal genetic "remnants" of their ancestors.

On December 3, Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, said that winter shoes for dogs are not just a fun element of the wardrobe, but the most reliable protection from snow and reagents. However, not all dogs like this accessory. It is also worth trying to consider the option of shoes with suspenders so that they do not fall off. The easiest alternative is to use protective wax before walking. This option is suitable for everyone, the expert says.
