Signals of a possible US withdrawal from NATO reflect a crisis of meaning within the alliance and a change in global security priorities. Nikita Setov, Deputy General Director of the Polylog Group for GR, told Izvestia on December 10.

According to him, the very scenario of the United States leaving the bloc looks unlikely, but the fact that such ideas are being voiced publicly at all indicates a transformation in Washington's approaches. The political scientist noted that the new US national security strategy no longer considers Russia as a key threat, but focuses on migration, border protection and technological leadership.

"NATO is not a priority instrument of foreign policy, therefore the alliance is a relic of the Cold War. Therefore, less attention needs to be paid to it and it is possible to express similar theses about getting out of it," Setov said.

He also concluded that such discussions demonstrate the problems within the European Union (EU), where the desire for confrontation has become the main foreign policy guideline.

On December 9, American Congressman Thomas Massey introduced a bill on the US withdrawal from the NATO bloc. According to the politician, the alliance is a relic of the Cold War, which cost taxpayers trillions of dollars. There is also a risk of the United States becoming involved in foreign conflicts due to the country's membership in the organization.
