An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 was recorded off the northern coast of Japan. This was reported on December 9 on the website of the country's main meteorological department.

The source was located at a depth of 10 km off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture. The maximum force of the tremors was four on a seven-point scale.

Earlier, on December 8, it was reported that seven people were injured as a result of a strong earthquake off the Pacific coast of Japan. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed the Government to cooperate with regional authorities to rescue the victims and provide timely information about the tsunami and evacuation. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara noted that about 800 households were left without electricity.
