The IKI RAS warned of strong magnetic storms on December 9-10
In the next few days, moderate to severe magnetic storms are forecast on Earth. This was announced on December 7 at the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"Strong magnetic storms with a high probability of auroras are forecast for December 9-10," the Telegram channel said.
According to scientists, in the coming Tuesday and Wednesday it is necessary to prepare for magnetic storms of the G2–G3 level, which can affect the operation of satellites and communication systems. These storms are caused by plasma ejections that occurred after an overnight solar flare of class M8.1.
As experts explained, the flare was moderate, but due to the fact that the center of the explosion was directed directly along the Sun–Earth line, the impact on the planet would be almost frontal, which increases its impact. The last such impact occurred on November 12-13, when the magnetic storm reached the G4 level. A storm is expected now, close to the peak level of G3.
The peak of magnetic disturbances is expected in the afternoon of December 9, and the storms themselves may continue until Thursday.
On the same day, the IKI RAS reported that plasma from the M8.1 double solar flare would reach Earth on Tuesday, December 9. The peak radiation power corresponds to 81% of the lower limit of the highest, X-class. Despite this, scientists have suggested that there should be no repeat of the G4-level magnetic storm that occurred in November as a result of the X5.1 outbreak.
