- The head of the Pentagon stated that the United States has no aspirations to change the status quo of Taiwan.
The United States does not want to provoke the People's Republic of China (PRC) into an open military conflict and does not intend to change its mind about Taiwan's status quo. This was announced on December 6 by Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth, speaking at a forum organized by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation in California.
"We are not trying to dominate them (China. — Ed.) or humiliate them, and we do not seek to change the status quo around Taiwan," he said.
He clarified that the United States is not seeking dominance in the Indo-Pacific region. Their main goal is to support their allies and not allow themselves to be dominated by China, Hegseth said.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian on December 3 called on the United States to cease any interaction with Taiwan. He asked the American side to faithfully observe the one-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiques, approach the Taiwan issue with extreme caution, cease official contacts with Taiwan and refrain from any erroneous signals to separatist forces.
