Russia has increased its tire recycling capacity fivefold
A closed—cycle economy continues to form in Russia, with waste recycling industries developing, the introduction of recyclables into construction and the production of everyday goods, including increased tire recycling capacity. Dmitry Tortev, a member of the expert council of the State Duma Committee for the Protection of Competition, told Izvestia on December 4.
"For example, tire recycling capacity in Russia has increased more than fivefold over the past 10 years," the expert said.
The recycling capacity of worn-out car tires among the companies that were able to pass the inspection for inclusion in the register of recycling facilities has reached 525 thousand tons, the Russian Environmental Operator (REO) told Izvestia. The Association for the Promotion of Tire Restoration and Recycling "Shinekologiya" reported in 2014 that annually in Russia, no more than 10% of the volume of all formed worn tires gets recycled, that is, no more than 100 thousand tons.
"Hundreds of thousands of tons of worn—out tires are produced in Russia every season, and their recycling is an important part of the closed-cycle economy. To date, the register of recycling facilities includes 24 tire waste disposal enterprises, their total capacity is about 525 thousand tons per year. The increase in capacity makes it possible to involve more and more rubber products in processing and reduce the load on landfills. The topic of tire recycling is especially relevant in the fall, during the season of mass "overshooting" of cars," the REO noted.
Old tires can be used to produce rubber chips for covering sports and playgrounds, asphalt additives and other useful materials, they added. Used tires should not be disposed of in household waste containers — they belong to hazard class IV waste and must be disposed of. Tires can be delivered to specialized reception points, car service stations or tire repair stations that cooperate with processors, the REO added. Fines are provided for the emission of tires in the wrong places in Russia.
On December 2, technical specialists of SberAuto, a service for buying, servicing and selling cars, named the reasons for frequent tire wear after "overshooting." According to them, a breakdown violation leads to uneven abrasion of the tread, and an aggressive driving style leads to hidden damage to the frame and accelerated destruction of the rubber. Bumps into pits and curbs cause hernias and deformities, which often manifest only after a while. Improper storage conditions and improper use of tires are also among the risk factors.
