The arrest of former head of the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini is a blow to the reputation of the European Commission (EC). This was announced on December 1 by the head of the Federation Council Commission on information policy, Alexei Pushkov.

"People are being detained in Europe for fraud <...> Federica Mogherini, which inevitably casts a shadow on the work of the entire European Commission," he wrote on the Telegram channel.

The senator stressed that the EC likes to talk about high EU standards and strict requirements for candidate countries in the field of combating corruption, but it turns out that corrupt officials were inside the commission itself.

Pushkov also recalled the regular accusations against EC President Ursula von der Leyen of the opaque and corrupt nature of transactions with Western pharmaceutical giants in the purchase of vaccines during the pandemic.

The European Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) announced on the same day that Mogherini and two other European officials were suspected of misusing the association's funds.

According to the newspaper Le Soir, on December 2, Mogherini was detained in Belgium in a fraud case involving an EU-funded diplomatic training program. Besides her, two other people were detained.

The French newspaper Le Monde reported on December 3 that after Mogherini's detention, shock reigned in the EU diplomatic service. At the same time, Herman van Rompuy, the former president of the European Council, said that he did not know anything about the case under consideration. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stressed that the EU often turns a blind eye to its internal problems, but at the same time "actively teaches other countries."
