- The court sentenced the ex-governor of the Khabarovsk Territory Furgal to 23 years in a penal colony.
The Babushkinsky District Court of Moscow sentenced the former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, to 23 years in a high-security penal colony in the case of organizing a criminal community and stealing assets from an SME bank. This was reported on December 3 by a correspondent of Izvestia from the courtroom.
Taking into account the previously imposed punishment, Furgal will stay in the colony for 25 years.
The ex-governor was found guilty of organizing a criminal community, large-scale fraud, illegal entrepreneurship and money laundering. He was also banned from holding administrative positions in government bodies.
In October, the state prosecution asked the court to find Furgal guilty and sentence him to 22 years in prison to serve his sentence in a high-security penal colony in the case of embezzlement from an SME bank. In addition, the prosecutor requested a fine of 11 million rubles. For the other defendants in the case, the prosecution requested terms ranging from four years in a general regime colony to 22 years in a high-security colony.
Furgal was detained in Khabarovsk in 2020. The ex-governor was charged with organizing contract killings committed by him when he was engaged in business activities (from 1999 to 2005). In 2021, the ex-governor's lawyer stated that a new criminal case had been opened against Furgal under Article 210 of the Criminal Code ("Organization of a criminal community") and several episodes of Article 159 of the Criminal Code ("Fraud").
In February 2024, a jury found the ex-governor guilty of organizing two murders and one attempted murder, as well as arms trafficking, but the statute of limitations on this episode has expired. Furgal was sentenced to 22 years in a high-security penal colony for organizing the murders of competitors in 2004-2005. At the same time, his defense, represented by lawyer Boris Kozhemyakin, announced its intention to appeal the verdict.
In September last year, the court upheld the sentence of Furgal, who was sentenced to 22 years for organizing two murders and one attempted murder.
