The European Commission (EC) intends on Wednesday, December 3, to submit a plan to obtain approval from Belgium for the use of frozen Russian assets. This was reported by the Politico newspaper, citing sources.

"The European Commission is proposing a legal solution to allay Belgium's concerns about the nightmarish scenario that could unfold if 140 billion euros in Russian assets frozen in Brussels are used as a loan to Ukraine. <...> A full loan offer is expected on Wednesday," the publication says.

It is clarified that the European Commission, in order to please Brussels, decided to deprive some European Union (EU) countries of the right to lift sanctions. According to the publication, this is exactly what Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is now able to do.

The newspaper added that the EC is actually trying to deprive Hungary of the right of veto. According to the source, this strategy is a way to "enlist the support of Belgium."

Politico reported on December 2 that the American authorities advocate the return of Russia's frozen assets if an agreement is reached to end the Ukrainian conflict. According to the publication, during the visit of the European Union's special envoy for sanctions, David O'Sullivan, to Washington in the summer, representatives of the American administration "unequivocally stated" that they planned to return frozen assets to Russia after signing a peace agreement.
