Austria welcomes CAS decision on skiers from the Russian Federation
Austrian skier Mika Fermoylen reacted emotionally to the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to allow athletes from Russia to participate in the tournaments of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS). This was reported on December 2 by the newspaper Sport-Express.
"Wow! If this news is true, I am very happy! But I will wait until we receive confirmation from the FIS and an official statement from the CAS," he said.
Along with this, Fermoylen expressed interest in the issue of the number of athletes allowed to compete.
Earlier that day, the CAS granted an appeal against the decision not to allow Russians to participate in the FIS tournaments. According to the CAS verdict, Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev said, Russian athletes in Olympic disciplines will compete in a neutral status, while Paralympians will compete under the national flag and with full national attributes, along with representatives of other countries.
At the same time, the senior coach of the Russian national ski racing team, Yuri Borodavko, said that it was too early to rejoice at the CAS decision, but the first step in the right direction had been taken. The coach stressed that key questions remain open: according to what criteria athletes will be allowed, what points and results they will need to qualify, and which starts they will be able to participate in.
