- The Ministry of Internal Affairs has warned about new fraud schemes on Chinese marketplaces
Scammers are using increasingly sophisticated techniques, from fake track numbers and neural network reviews to creating "mirrors" of well—known stores and hidden surcharges when placing an order. This was reported on November 30 in the Telegram channel of the Department for the organization of the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.
"Fraud schemes on popular Chinese marketplaces are becoming more sophisticated: fake tracking numbers, neural network reviews, "mirrors" of well-known stores and hidden surcharges at checkout. But you can protect yourself if you know the rules of the game," the publication says.
According to the Interior Ministry, it is important for buyers to carefully check the delivery data: the track number should be tracked not only on the marketplace itself, but also through independent services, including Russian Post, Cainiao and others. A mismatch of statuses or a "frozen" track is a reason to be wary.
We recommend paying special attention to reviews — new accounts, identical product photos, and overly positive comments may indicate fraud. Customers are advised to study negative reviews and, if necessary, check the images through a picture search.
The Interior Ministry stressed that the actual package of goods or the mention that the product is a "replica" is often hidden at the end of the description. In addition, it is necessary to carefully check the name and address of the store: even one changed letter may mean that we are talking about a fake page imitating the official store.
The agency also recommends communicating with the seller before payment. The lack of a response or evasive comments should be a reason to cancel the purchase. If the seller requires an additional payment, it is better to cancel the order before shipping. If problems arise, the buyer should open a dispute by providing photos and videos of unpacking, as well as screenshots of the product description and correspondence.
"Marketplaces try to protect customers, but only if you are vigilant yourself. Do not rush to click "buy" and always check the details," the agency noted.
Earlier that day, it was reported that fraudsters were using a new deception scheme by sending fake sales receipts to victims. First, the attackers call the person and convince them that they are supposed to receive a gift. This is followed by a second call, this time from "representatives of law enforcement agencies" who claim that there was no registration of the gift, and a transfer to a prohibited organization went from the recipient's bank account.
