German Chancellor Friedrich Merz considers his birth in West Germany lucky. He stated this on November 29 during the land party congress of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Saxony-Anhalt.

"I was lucky — and this is nothing more than luck and chance — that I was born and raised in the West [of Germany]," the politician said.
