- Politico learned about the possible sale of diplomatic property by London due to lack of funds
The United Kingdom will consider reducing its diplomatic presence in the world by selling relevant properties worth about $3.3 billion amid a shortage of funds, Politico newspaper reported on November 28.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is "rationalizing" about 6.5 thousand diplomatic facilities in order to "free up assets," the material says.
As part of the program, the British Foreign Office will sell embassies and other diplomatic premises that are no longer needed. Special attention is drawn to the $16 million luxury apartment on the 38th floor of 50 United Nations Plaza in New York, a seven-room space acquired in 2019 for trade negotiations with the United States after Brexit.
It clarifies that more than 900 objects of the British department were considered "unreliable or unsafe for further operation." The British Foreign Ministry estimated their continued maintenance at $600 million. The restructuring process is currently underway. In this regard, the staff based in the United Kingdom may be reduced by 30%.
In addition, the British department is reviewing the number of staff in other countries. The layoffs may cover over 250 positions in 150 countries around the world.
As Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin noted on November 26, the UK does not have enough money to financially support Ukraine. The country has a difficult economic situation, and it is impossible to find funds, especially from internal reserves.
On November 21, Bloomberg reported that the British leadership had approved a plan to send troops to Ukraine in the event of an end to the conflict. The country intends to spend more than £100 million ($130 million) on the implementation of this measure.
