So, in ancient Greece, celebrations were held in honor of Rhea, the mother of all the gods and the guardian of the hearth. In the Christian tradition, both Orthodox and Catholic, the Virgin Mary, who gave birth to Jesus Christ, has always been highly revered. Her image became the personification of maternal love and care.

The prototype of modern Mother's Day originated in England around 1600. At that time, the holiday was called Mother's Sunday and was celebrated in the fourth week of Great Lent. On this day, believers were released from work and visited their parents.

A new page in the history of the holiday began in 1907 in the USA. American Anna Jarvis, who lost her mother early, took the initiative to establish a special day to honor all mothers. She sent letters to statesmen, urging them to set a date for this holiday in the calendar. Her efforts were crowned with success: in 1910, the authorities of the state of Virginia officially supported the proposal and approved Mother's Day. Over time, the celebration became nationwide.

Mother's Day has come a long way in Russia. The first attempt to establish a holiday was made in 1915 by Ragnar Fernberg, the chief instructor of the Petrograd scout troop. The celebration took place on December 1, but it did not gain wide popularity at that time.

Mother's Day was remembered again in 1988. Then a teacher from Baku, Elmira Huseynova, organized a holiday in the city's schools, and then actively promoted its dissemination. Thanks to her efforts, the celebration gained popularity among Baku residents, and then gained recognition in Stavropol, where the teacher moved later.

In 1993, the holiday was revived in Yakutia on the initiative of the regional government. It was celebrated on the third Sunday of October to highlight the contribution of mothers to the upbringing of children and the development of society. The idea resonated with residents of other regions, so Bashkortostan and the Chelyabinsk Region soon joined the celebration.

The official status of Mother's Day was acquired in 1998. The corresponding proposal was made by State Duma deputy, member of the Committee on Women, Family and Youth Affairs Alevtina Aparina. The initiative was supported by Russian President Boris Yeltsin, and soon a new holiday appeared on the calendar. The date chosen for it was the last Sunday in November.

On Mother's Day, concerts, exhibitions of children's drawings and crafts, family festivals and other events are held throughout the country. Matinees and themed lessons are being prepared for the holiday in schools and kindergartens. Public organizations are launching charity events in support of single mothers, large families, and children in orphanages.

In addition, mothers with many children are awarded state awards on this day. Women who have given birth (or adopted) and raised 10 or more children are awarded the title of "Mother Heroine." Spouses who have raised at least seven children can be awarded the Order of Parental Glory. There are also regional medals, titles, and other insignia.
