- The political scientist assessed the ability of the United States to exclude Europe from the negotiations on Ukraine
The United States will seek to exclude Europe from participating in the peace talks on Ukraine. This opinion was expressed by political scientist, Deputy director of the Institute of History and Politics of Moscow State University, Vladimir Shapovalov on Tuesday, November 25.
"Until recently, they managed, through certain consultations with European leaders, not to include Europe in a full-fledged negotiation process. Negotiations with Russia are a key element of the negotiation process here. In this sense, we do not yet see a trilateral format involving the United States, Russia and Europe, and most likely we will not see it," Shapovalov said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
According to the expert, the probability of excluding the Europeans from the negotiation process is quite high, since Russia does not want Europe's participation in resolving the conflict. If the United States succeeds in pushing Europe away from the Ukrainian settlement, it will be a serious military, political and diplomatic defeat that will definitively demonstrate the weakness of the position of the European Union (EU), the political scientist concluded.
Earlier, on November 24, The Washington Post reported that EU countries were unhappy that they were not participating in negotiations between the United States and Ukraine as part of the conflict settlement, RT reports.
It is noted that the current stage of negotiations is "shrouded in an atmosphere of mystery," reports NSN.
On the same day, Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, called the EU's counter-proposal to resolve the Ukrainian conflict "delusional." In addition, the professor clarified that Ukraine had been "betrayed" by people who had rejected peaceful ways to resolve the conflict for years. Dizen did not specify who exactly he was talking about.
The newspaper Politico reported on the same day that the EU did not support the counter-proposal of the "eurotroika" in Ukraine. According to the source, the EU authorities have blocked a 28-point plan for a Ukrainian settlement submitted by Britain, Germany and France. The reason for the refusal in Brussels was the "outdated" content of the plan.
The day before, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the settlement talks held in Geneva the most productive of all time and clarified that Washington and Kiev had made "tremendous progress" during them. On the same day, the American Secretary of State stressed that the United States understands the position of the Russian side in the same way as it understands what is a priority and unacceptable for each of the parties to the Ukrainian conflict.
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, in turn, called the European plan to resolve the situation in Ukraine "unacceptable."
