- The first eruption of the Haili Gubbi volcano in 12 thousand years took place in Ethiopia.
The Haili Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia has become active for the first time in 12,000 years, spewing a powerful column of ash to a height of 14 km and across the Red Sea towards Yemen and Oman. This was reported on November 24 by The Guardian newspaper.
The eruption began on Sunday and lasted for several hours. According to the article, Haili Gubbi is located about 800 km northeast of Addis Ababa, near the border with Eritrea, in the Rift Valley zone, where tectonic plates converge and high seismic activity is regularly recorded.
Local official Mohammed Syed noted that there were no casualties, but the consequences could directly affect the economy of the local cattle community. He stressed that no previous information about any eruptions of Hailey Gubbi had been recorded.
According to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC), the cloud from the eruption covered the territories of Yemen, Oman, India and northern Pakistan. Satellite images confirmed the high emission column.
According to the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism program, Haili Gubbi showed no activity throughout the Holocene, the period that began after the last glacial stage about 12,000 years ago. Volcanologist from Michigan Technological University Simon Karn confirmed the absence of records of past eruptions.
The Antara news Agency reported on November 24 that Indonesia has recorded eight new volcanic eruptions in the province of East Java. According to the agency, the ash ejected by the volcano reached a height of 1,000 m above the crater, or 4,676 m above sea level. The ash is actively spreading to the north.
