There are traditionally few premieres in December, both on television and in movies. The creators of new spectacles are waiting for the "bread" New Year's Eve to surely capture the minds of the audience. Only those who are practically guaranteed success decide to air new TV shows this month. So, this month, the second seasons of "Fallout" and "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" will be released, as well as the fifth season of "Stranger Things." Among the new TV shows in December are two spin—offs of the popular TV shows "Doctor Who" and "Spartacus. Blood and sand." Izvestia tells about the most interesting series of December.

"The Tunnel"

December 1st

KION

Svetlana Suvorova works at customs in a small town on the border with Finland. Smugglers hate her for her honesty and integrity: she has an impeccable reputation, and none of those who try to smuggle goods across the border have ever managed to negotiate with her. And then the mafia goes to extreme measures.: First, Svetlana receives threats against herself and her family, and then bandits kidnap her husband, promising to return him in exchange for some services — assistance in delivering illegal goods. Svetlana finds herself in a dilemma: to remain true to herself and her principles, or to try to save her loved one, no matter what the cost.

The main role was played by Elizaveta Boyarskaya ("Admiral", "Anna Karenina. The story of Vronsky"). At first, you don't expect an actress specializing in the roles of ladies of light and demimonde to successfully play the role of a customs officer brandishing a pistol and kneading mud in no man's land — and in vain. The actress copes well with the role and it's a pleasant surprise. Unpleasant, perhaps, is not expected — the series fully complies with the domestic standards of "gangster" cinema: the ominous voices of the mafia, loudly slamming car doors and a fight among gray, poorly lit snowdrifts. Fans of the genre will be pleased.

"Skliff"

The series tells about the work of trauma surgeon Evgenia Pokrovskaya, who saves the lives of patients at the Institute of Emergency Medicine every day. Each episode is a day in the life of Evgenia and her medical colleagues, who are ready to fight death every minute. But the work of a doctor is not only humanism and dedication: the institute cannot do without intrigues, internal conflicts, unhealthy competition and stereotypes. Eugenia has to prove her right to the traditionally male job of a surgeon every day, repeatedly demonstrating her professional skills. And even Evgenia's former lover becomes her rival, competing with her for the position.

The creators took the filming seriously: sets were created specifically for the TV series, reproducing in every detail the emergency department of the real Moscow Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine. The role of Evgenia Pokrovskaya was played by Kristina Asmus ("District Center", "Samsara"), who found herself in the role of a trauma surgeon surprisingly out of place. Still, to demonstrate a woman's determination and strength, it's not enough to constantly chew gum and speak at the limit of emotions. The unsinkable Ivan Okhlobystin (Interns) will also transfer to Skliff, which will undoubtedly add humor to the show. However, they say that at the end of filming, the producers terminated the contract with Asmus due to the difficult nature of the actress. So the continuation of the series is questionable. Well, we'll watch while they give it.

"Abandoned"

Mid-19th century, America. The inhabitants of a godforsaken hole in Oregon unite to fight back against uninvited aliens who want to take their land. The resistance is led by women. The eldest of them is Fiona, pious, experienced, with an indomitable will. Her love for the orphaned children she adopted and her faith in God help her to survive where men are ready to give up. But Fiona's example is contagious, and all together, acting as a single force, the inhabitants of the city will defend the land on which they were born.

Kurt Sutter ("Sons of Anarchy"), a great master of hardcore criminal action films, became the director of the Forsaken. The main role was played by Gillian Anderson, Agent Scully from The X—Files, who has a lot of screen experience playing strong women. So Anderson will provide the plot with firmness and perseverance in faith, and her on-screen partner Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister from "Game of Thrones") will give him a little beauty. The show promises to be worthy.

"Spartacus: The House of Ashura"

5th of December

Starz

The new series is a spin—off of the popular peplum "Spartacus. Blood and sand." At the end of the original series, charming traitor Ashur is killed during the battle on Vesuvius. The creators decided to give the charming villain another chance by rewriting the final part of the plot. Now Ashur receives reinforcements in time and helps to kill Spartacus and suppress the slave rebellion, and as a reward receives ownership of the gladiator school, left without a master after the death of Batiatus. Viewers will not only be shown an alternative version of the story, but they will also discover Ashur's secret, which is why he disliked Spartacus and other gladiators so much.

Showrunners Rick Jacobson and Steven Denight decided to revive "Spartacus" once again, it seems, having fully realized the secret of its popularity: viewers like to watch half-naked men with swords who crumble each other into noodles in front of beauties and old men in red velvet. The plot of the spin-off, of course, is secondary: the very atmosphere of Ancient Rome, with fights to the death for the amusement of the public, with the addition of a pinch of equally famous Roman orgies, beauties with reduced social responsibility in frivolous tunics and political intrigues, fascinates too many to miss such a chance.

"The war between land and sea"

December 7

Disney+

A deadly threat is looming over the planet. Representatives of the ancient race of sea devils came ashore from the sea, seizing new territories and striving to subjugate the planet. People suspect that sea devils are hiding deadly weapons at the bottom of the ocean that will help them defeat humanity. The UNIT organization, led by Kate Leitbridge-Stewart, is taking over the conflict. A young employee of UNIT Barkley enters into negotiations with representatives of the sea devils, trying to figure out their plans, and gets a chance to change the course of history and prevent a catastrophe.

"The War between Land and Sea" is another spin-off of the popular Doctor Who series, already the fifth in a row, not counting the documentary series about the filming of TV shows and animated films. The script was written by the creator of the main series, Russell T. Davis. The director was Dylan Holmes Williams, who worked with Davis on several episodes of the original Doctor Who. So you can be calm about the inviolability of stylistics. Fans of the original series have reason to rejoice.

"Man versus baby"

December 11th

Netflix

Eternal loser Trevor Bingley finally gets a responsible job: he has to keep an eye on a rich penthouse in central London while the owners are away. The watchman's quiet life, however, is disrupted by a baby thrown on the doorstep — and from now on, Mr. Bingley's dreams of sleeping off in a comfortable workplace come to an end: he will have to provide comfort to the baby through his own sleep and rest, while fending off accusations of kidnapping a baby and constantly getting into the most ridiculous troubles...

This time, the audience is congratulated by the famous British comedian Rowan Atkinson, better known as Mr. Bean — a fool, a clumsy loser, full of ridiculous but touching charm. Actually, Atkinson has been playing the same character all his life, so the new series can be considered a logical outcome of the main part of his previous work. A cute, clueless loser with awkward movements and a silly smile on his face with a baby under the Christmas tree is not the worst background for preparing for the holidays.
