The doctor warned about the harm to the eyes due to the humidifier
Home humidifiers can pose a serious risk to eye health if used improperly. As Khadizhat Suleymanova, a specialist at the Vision ophthalmological center, warned in an interview with Izvestia, the use of uncleaned devices leads to the spread of mold spores, bacteria and small particles in the air that cause allergic reactions and irritation of the mucous membrane of the eyes.
Ultrasonic models, which create a cold mist along with salts, dust and microorganisms from a dirty tank, are particularly dangerous. These particles settle on the skin and mucous membrane, causing itching, redness and lacrimation.
"The risk increases when the device is placed close to the face or pointed at the sleeping place. To prevent problems, the humidity in the room should be maintained at 40-60%, using a hygrometer to accurately monitor the indicators," the expert advised.
Regular maintenance of the humidifier includes draining the remaining water daily, wiping the tank dry, and rinsing with a mild detergent every few days. Distilled or low-mineralized water should be used for refueling, which reduces the formation of white plaque on furniture and reduces the concentration of solid particles in the air. Replacement filters and cartridges must be changed strictly according to the schedule set by the manufacturer.
If symptoms of allergic inflammation appear, including itchy eyelids, redness of both eyes and mucous discharge, it is recommended to temporarily switch to glasses and use one-day contact lenses. Vasoconstrictor drops are not suitable for long-term use due to the rebound effect, whereas double-acting antihistamines without preservatives help control an allergic reaction.
"To reduce contact with mold, it is important to ensure regular ventilation, use an extractor hood in damp rooms and eliminate leaks in a timely manner. Consultation with an ophthalmologist is necessary if symptoms persist, and a visit to an allergist is necessary if problems recur seasonally or if there are concomitant diseases," the doctor concluded.
Earlier, on August 10, ophthalmologist and CEO of VISTA Ophthalmological Center Anton Kazantsev shared habits that can preserve eyesight. He called the "20-20-20 rule" the most underestimated, the essence of which is the need to look up from the screen every 20 minutes and look at an object at a distance of 20 m for 20 seconds. According to the expert, this practice reduces the risk of myopia progression.
