The epidemiological situation of meningococcal infection in Russia is stable. This was announced by the press service of the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor) on Wednesday, November 19.

The ministry noted that since the beginning of 2025, an increase in the incidence of meningococcal infection has been recorded in the country, but thanks to anti-epidemic measures, the spread of infection and the formation of large group foci were not allowed.

"The incidence of meningococcal infection is concentrated in several regions of the Russian Federation, where effective preventive measures are being taken. Currently, the epidemiological situation of meningococcal infection in the Russian Federation has stabilized and does not exceed the average annual incidence rate," the Moscow City News Agency quotes the message.

It is specified that in Russia, highly sensitive domestic test systems are used to diagnose meningococcal infection, which make it possible to quickly identify meningococcus and the serogroup of the pathogen.

Rospotrebnadzor recommended following personal hygiene rules to minimize the risk of illness. You should also regularly carry out routine cleaning and ventilation of the premises, avoid contact with people who have signs of an infectious disease, and if the first symptoms of malaise appear, it is important to immediately consult a doctor for examination and medical attention.

Earlier that day, Andrey Pozdnyakov, Candidate of Medical Sciences, infectious diseases specialist at Invitro, and expert at the Infowork educational marketplace, told Izvestia that severe forms of meningococcal infection "cause extremely high mortality," and if an outbreak of meningococcus occurs in teams, then a person is more likely to become infected. He strongly recommended getting vaccinated against meningococcus. 360.ru .

On September 15, immunologist Vladimir Bolibok said that meningitis remains a dangerous disease, despite rare cases of epidemics in Russia, RT reports. He clarified that meningitis can be caused by meningococcus or hemophilic bacillus. The specialist added that there is a vaccine against both hemophilic bacillus and meningococcus.

According to the doctor, the highest incidence is recorded in the so—called meningitis belt - in the countries of equatorial Africa and tropical Asia. In Russia, cases are sporadic.
