The Russian owners have agreed to sell their 56.15% stake in the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS) company, the buyer has not been disclosed. This was announced on November 19 by the Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia Dubravka Jedovic-Handanovic.
"The Russian owners have agreed to sell their stake in the Serbian Oil Industry, which amounts to 56.15%. <...> The name of the third party is not disclosed because we are talking about business negotiations between serious companies," the newspaper quoted the head of the Serbian Ministry of Energy as saying. She also added that NIS, through its lawyers in the United States, has submitted a request to the Washington government for an extension of the operating license in order to continue supplying crude oil and continue operations.
Earlier, on November 15, Djedovic-Khandanovic reported that the United States had demanded Russia's withdrawal from ownership of NIS as a condition for lifting sanctions against it. According to the minister, the Serbian authorities have received an extremely harsh signal from Washington.
Serbia's mining minister said on October 20 that the country was in an almost hopeless situation after the decision of the Council of the European Union (EU) to ban the transit of Russian gas, especially given the current problems around NIS. However, despite the complexity of the situation, she stressed that Belgrade is counting on the help of its President Aleksandar Vucic and his "excellent relations with world leaders."
