- The Russian Academy of Sciences announced the activity of the human respiratory syncytial virus
The human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is quite active this year. This was announced on November 18 by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Education Gennady Onishchenko.
"The respiratory-sensitive virus is also behaving quite actively this year, although today there are only 0.4% of them in the total mass of circulating ones," he said during a press conference at the MMP Rossiya Segodnya.
According to Onishchenko, the clinical manifestations of the virus are more aggressive and severe, which is why RSV has received a lot of attention this year.
Earlier, on November 10, Singaporean scientists reported under the PREPARE program that RSV could be comparable to other, more well-known respiratory viral infections (ARVI), such as influenza and COVID-19. Then scientists found out that the mortality rate from RSV is 5%, which exceeds the figures for influenza. It was noted that the virus was discovered in 1956 when investigating an outbreak of the disease in chimpanzees, and a year later it was isolated from humans.
