The expert assessed the possibility of a live worm getting into the eye.
Alexander Lukashev, director of the Institute of Medical Parasitology at Sechenov University, told how a live worm can get into a person's eye.
"We are talking about dirofilariasis, a fairly rare parasitic disease. About 100 cases are registered in Russia every year," the expert explained in an interview with aif.ru November 15th.
He noted that previously this disease was considered characteristic of the southern regions, but in recent years, due to climate change, it has moved to colder areas. According to him, infection occurs after a mosquito bite: a thin worm about 10 centimeters long gets under the skin, which can manifest itself as a slowly moving nodule or heaviness. The specialist added that in about a third of patients, the parasite reaches the eye, so such cases are not uncommon.
He also stressed that in most situations, surgeons remove the worm without consequences for the patient.
On November 13, it became known that doctors in Omsk had extracted a live worm from a patient's eye. The woman sought emergency help complaining of a feeling of movement under her eyelid. Upon examination, an ophthalmologist found a live parasite under the patient's eyelid, which was immediately removed, writes Life.ru .
The extracted worm turned out to be a dirofilaria, a round parasite carried by mosquitoes, writes IA Regnum. The larvae enter the body after being bitten by an insect that has previously absorbed the blood of an infected animal. Sometimes adult worms reach 15-18 cm in length. On average, doctors remove 3-4 dirofilariae per year, Moscow 24 reports. According to RIAMO, such parasites are not able to reproduce in the human body.
In July, doctors removed a 4 cm long helminth from the eye of a resident of Kemerovo. The woman went to the doctors, complaining of a strange bubble on the protein, notes 360.ru .
In February, ophthalmologists in Ufa removed a helminth from the lower eyelid of a 40-year-old woman. The patient went to a medical institution with complaints of "movement" in the lower eyelid of the left eye.
