Renault and Nissan are in talks to resume the partnership that began 26 years ago. Recent changes in the management of both companies and the financial problems of the Japanese manufacturer have forced them to take a fresh look at the situation, the Financial Times reports.

According to sources familiar with the negotiations, the now former Renault CEO Luca de Meo advocated the sale of the French group's stake in Nissan after relations between them soured after the arrest of Carlos Ghosn, who led the Japanese company in 2018.

In 2023, Renault decided to gradually reduce its stake in Nissan, which previously stood at 43%, to 10%. DeMeo wanted to reinvest Renault's proceeds from the sale of its stake in Nissan in the development of the French company. The deal was complicated by the fall in the value of Nissan shares and the high premium that DeMeo requested for their sale. In July of this year, Renault announced that it would write off €9.5 billion due to the revaluation of its stake in Nissan. Luca Demeo's departure from office this summer led to discussions about strengthening the alliance, which was supported by Francois Provo, who replaced him.

"Twenty years of working with Nissan have taught us that we are able not only to negotiate a partnership, but also, above all, to implement it in the interests of Renault," he said at an event in Paris in early November.

According to a Renault source, Provo and Nissan's new chief executive Ivan Espinosa regularly discuss how the companies can support each other, which is a "good sign" for the future relationship.

Earlier, on August 26, Nissan announced the cessation of production of the iconic GT-R model. According to the head of the company, Ivan Espinosa, Nissan plans to release a new generation of GT-R in the future, but he is not ready to give even approximate dates for the return of the sports car to the market.
