Israel announced the continued military presence in the Golan Heights in Syria.
The Israeli Armed Forces (IDF) will not withdraw from the buffer zone on the border with the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) and on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon. This was announced on November 16 by Defense Minister Israel Katz.
"The Israel Defense Forces will remain on top of Mount Hermon and in the buffer zone," Katz wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
After the change of power in the Syrian Republic, the IDF deployed forces along the Syrian border in December to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens and communities in the Golan Heights and took control of the Hermon mountain range. In addition, the Israeli military has attacked Syrian targets several times.
The Jerusalem Post newspaper, citing a statement by President Ahmed al-Sharaa on September 13, reported that Syria and Israel were negotiating the withdrawal of IDF forces from the territory in the south of the SAR.
