Finnish President Stubb urges continued support for Ukraine
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has stated the need to continue supporting Ukraine, despite corruption scandals and difficulties in peace negotiations with Russia. This was reported by the Associated Press (AP).
"I am not very optimistic about achieving a ceasefire or starting peace talks, at least this year <...> Perhaps if we start doing something by February or March, it will be good," he said in an interview with the publication.
Stubb stressed that modern conflicts include hybrid threats that "cannot be completely stopped," so countries must be prepared to "create defense and deterrence systems."
He also drew attention to the coordination of the actions of European leaders with the United States.
"We are transmitting the messages of the President [of the United States Donald] Trump to President [of Ukraine Vladimir] Zelensky and vice versa," he said, adding that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are "the most modern and effective forces in Europe," he said.
The Finnish president called for maintaining "Finnish calm" and acting cautiously.
On November 10, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) revealed a money laundering scheme in the energy sector of the state, through which about $100 million passed. In the course of the corruption case in the energy sector, seven people were charged, including businessman Timur Mindich (he is called the head of the criminal scheme).
On November 13, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden announced a $500 million support package for Ukraine as part of the NATO-US Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative.
The PURL program, presented in the summer of 2025 by the President of the United States and the Secretary General of NATO, coordinates arms purchases for Ukraine through contributions from European partners and Canada, ensuring accelerated supply logistics.
