Former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has asked Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to include him in the list of civilian prisoners. This was reported on November 13 by RBC-Ukraine.

"Saakashvili asked Zelensky to add him to the list of civilian prisoners," the newspaper's Telegram channel says.

In his address, Saakashvili recalled that Zelensky had already helped him regain Ukrainian citizenship in 2019. As a result, he asks to be included in the list of civilians held, according to him, by the Georgian authorities.

Earlier, Saakashvili was returned to prison from the Vivamed clinic, where he had been since May 2022.

On March 12, the ex-president was also sentenced to nine years in prison in a case of embezzlement of about 9 million lari (more than $3.2 million) from the state budget. According to the Georgian prosecutor's office, a significant part of this amount was spent in 2009-2012 on the personal needs of the politician, including luxury goods. In addition to cases of embezzlement and illegal border crossing, Saakashvili was charged with illegally dispersing a rally in 2007.

Later, on March 17, the court sentenced Saakashvili to another 4.5 years in prison for illegally crossing the border in 2021. On November 6, another criminal case was opened against Saakashvili and a number of opposition leaders for calling for the overthrow of the government.

On October 29, Georgian President Mikhail Kavelashvili supported the initiative to ban three opposition political forces, including Saakashvili's United National Movement. It was clarified that the ban would not affect a number of other factions. Among them are "Federalists", "Droa", "Girchi — more freedom", "European Georgia", "Agmashenebeli Strategy". These exceptions were explained by the lack of real political force among these parties.
