- More than 1,000 Starbucks employees have declared their readiness to strike in the United States.
More than 1,000 Starbucks employees are preparing to strike at 65 establishments in the United States to protest the lack of progress in labor negotiations between the union and the company. This was announced on November 13 by NBC.
It is noted that employees are seeking to improve working conditions and staffing in establishments where, according to them, long waits are commonplace for coffee shop customers. They also demand higher wages.
The strike was intended to prevent Starbucks from holding Red Glass Day, which is usually one of the busiest days of the year. Since 2018, as part of the promotion, visitors receive a reusable red glass when buying a seasonal drink.
The Starbucks Workers Unite union said the strike would affect establishments in 45 cities, including New York, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, San Diego and Seattle, the hometown of Starbucks. Currently, about 550 Starbucks outlets owned by the company in the United States are members of the union.
The end date of the strike has not yet been determined, and, according to the organizers, other non-union establishments are ready to join it if Starbucks does not reach an agreement.
In May, it was reported that employees of at least 120 Starbucks coffee shops went on strike over a new dress code, according to which they were required to wear a plain black shirt and denim trousers in three colors: khaki, black or blue under their aprons. Employees of these coffee shops from three US states have also filed lawsuits against the company, claiming that the coffee giant violated the law by changing the dress code and refusing to reimburse employees who had to buy new clothes.
