Yuletide divination is a unique blend of ancient pagan rituals and Christian traditions. From January 6-7, our ancestors searched for answers to the most important questions about love, fate and the future, hoping to look beyond the veil of time. Today, these rituals remain a bridge between the past and the present, allowing not only to predict future events, but also to tune in to positive changes. Which methods of fortune-telling are considered the most effective in 2026, tell Izvestia.

When to celebrate Christmas in 2026

Yuletide is a traditional winter holiday in Orthodox culture, covering the period from January 7, when Christmas is celebrated, to January 18, on the eve of Epiphany. The very word "Yuletide" comes from the verb "to sanctify", which reflects the special meaning of these days. The history of the holiday dates back to the IV–VI centuries, when the church officially approved this cycle as a time of festive celebrations associated with Christmas and Epiphany.

The Yuletide holiday has absorbed not only Christian traditions, but also the ancient pagan customs of the Slavs. In pre—Christian times, during this period, the Slavs honored Kolyada, a deity symbolizing the sun and the beginning of the new year. To appease the spirits and ensure well-being, people organized ritual festivities, prepared special treats, baked gingerbread in the form of sacrificial animals, lit candles and lit new bonfires, symbolizing renewal and purification.

In the Orthodox tradition, Yuletide is the 12 sacred days when the boundary between the worlds of the living and spirits becomes thinner, and magic and predictions gain special power. Yuletide was accompanied by carols, mummery rituals and Yuletide divination, which were popularly considered a reliable way to find out the future. St. Basil's Day (January 14) was especially revered, when many girls were guessing at their betrothed.

In 2026, Yuletide falls on January 7-17 according to the new style. This period remains an important cultural and religious event, in which various ancient traditions are interwoven.

What is customary to do on Christmas Eve: traditions and rituals

Christmas holidays are filled with folk traditions and rituals that create a special atmosphere of warmth, joy and spiritual unity. It is a time of family gatherings, when relatives and friends gather around a lavish festive table to celebrate the great Christian holiday together.

Among the main traditions is a festive dinner on Christmas Eve (January 6), temporarily ending the Christmas fast. This evening, there must be a kutia on the table — a grain dish with honey, nuts and dried fruits, symbolizing wealth and fertility. Dinner begins after the appearance of the first star in the sky — this symbolizes the star of Bethlehem, which showed the way to the Magi to the Christ child. The table is decorated with a white tablecloth and traditional lenten dishes are served, while cleaning and hard work are strictly prohibited on these days in order to preserve the holy atmosphere of the holiday.

During Yuletide, the tradition of caroling is preserved — merry rounds of houses with the performance of carols, songs and poems that bless the owners, wish them health and prosperity. Carolers, often dressed up in masquerade costumes and images of animals or fairy-tale characters, receive treats, sweets and small gifts as a reward. This ritual strengthens the bond between neighbors and creates a festive mood.

Yuletide festivities are accompanied by round dances, songs, games and theatrical performances, where mummers depict the forces of nature and fairy-tale heroes protecting the house from evil spirits. A special place is occupied by the symbolism of fire: candles and lamps are lit in houses, symbolizing the light, warmth and purification brought by Christmas.

It is also very important to show mercy during this period. Believers try to visit churches to participate in divine services, confession and communion, as well as help the poor, sick and needy, and give gifts to orphanages and orphanages. This spiritual component gives Christmas special significance and helps strengthen community ties.

Fortune-telling on Christmas Day: rituals for fortune-telling

Yuletide fortune—telling is one of the most mysterious and fascinating traditions of Christmas Eve, when, according to popular beliefs, the boundary between the worlds is especially thin, and you can look into the future. Despite the disapproval of the church, these rituals have enjoyed great popularity since ancient times. Among the most famous fortune—telling is fortune-telling with mirrors. To do this, at midnight, the girl sat in a dark room between two mirrors, lit candles and peered into the "mirrored corridor", hoping to see the image of the future groom. At the same time, conspiracies were uttered, for example: "The betrothed is in disguise, come to me dressed up." They believed that in the reflection you can catch the silhouette or features of the chosen one.

Fortune-telling on a ring was very popular: the ring was lowered into the water and the shadow cast by a candle on the wall determined the features of the future husband. The girls also put a comb or bread under their pillow, saying spells to see their betrothed in a dream.

Fortune—telling on the street also took place - for example, in the middle of the night, meeting the first passerby and asking his name, believing that this is the name of the future husband. Another ritual is choosing a log from the woodpile by touch: smooth and smooth promised a spouse with an ideal character.

Candles played a special role in these rituals. Their fire cleared the space of evil forces and helped to focus on the issue, and the preparation of the furniture with candles created an atmosphere of mystery.

In addition to fortune-telling for love, there were others: prosperity, health, luck. For example, they launched a rooster onto a table with objects laid out — a ring, a coin, a grain — and predicted the future according to his choice.

Pulling out pieces of paper is a simple but symbolic fortune—telling on Christmas Eve, which was often practiced by girls. Several small pieces of paper are prepared in advance for him, on each of which different predictions or variants of events concerning the coming year are written. They usually make from 12 to 22 notes with different options: for example, "happiness", "journey", "wedding", "wish fulfillment", etc. Before going to bed, these pieces of paper are put under the pillow, and in the morning they pull out three notes. It is believed that what falls out will definitely come true in the coming year.

Paper—burning fortune-telling is a more complex and mystical ritual. They take a piece of paper for him, on which they usually write a question or a wish. The sheet is folded or slightly crumpled, set on fire, placed on a plate or a non-flammable surface and waited until it is almost burnt out. A lighted candle is held up from the ashes to observe the shadows cast by the ashes on the wall or on the surface. The shapes and outlines of the shadow are interpreted as symbols of upcoming events. For example, the silhouette of a tree can mean growth and development, a heart — love, and a road or bridge — travel and change.

An important condition for such divination is silence and concentration in order to see and feel the symbols. This ritual was especially appreciated for its clarity and deep mystical meaning: the shadow from the ashes draws future lines of fate, paying attention to what to expect.
