The European Commission will no longer be able to issue ordinary loans to Ukraine
The European Commission and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have expressed concern about Ukraine's weak credit stability and are no longer considering the possibility of providing it with conventional commercial loans. This was stated on November 12 by European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis at a press conference following the meeting of the Eurogroup on November 12.
According to Dombrovskis, Ukraine is facing a serious funding shortfall, which is of concern to both the European Commission and the IMF.
"We can no longer simply continue to provide her with ordinary loans in the form of, for example, macro—financial assistance programs," he said.
The European Commission, Dombrovskis stressed, continues to cooperate with the Belgian authorities to create a mechanism for the so-called "reparation loan" involving the use of proceeds from frozen Russian assets.
Earlier in the day, French Economy Minister Roland Lescure said that the transfer of Russian assets to Ukraine was technically possible and politically expedient. He expressed hope that the European Commission would be able to convince Belgium to support the use of frozen funds for financial assistance to Kiev.
