The construction of the first nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan is of historical importance and requires very careful preparation. Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, told Izvestia about this on November 12.

"This will be a very serious, significant contribution to the energy supply, to the stable supply of electricity to the whole of Kazakhstan. <...> This project has a truly historical significance. Both in terms of the volume of investments, it will be more than $16 billion, and in terms of the impact on all parameters of Kazakhstan's macroeconomics," he explained.

Likhachev added that the survey work on the shore of Lake Ulken has already been launched, but it will take about a year to complete. At the same time, work is underway to create intergovernmental agreements, at least on the construction of a nuclear power plant and financial cooperation.

"I really hope that next year this project will be fully legally formed. After that, we will determine the level of localization, the level of involvement of Kazakhstani partners, and we will be able to talk about more precise dates from commissioning," he said.

On August 8, Russia and Kazakhstan launched the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the republic. Likhachev noted that the construction of the first nuclear power plant became possible thanks to the cooperation of the governments of Russia and Kazakhstan. The Russian side, he continued, proposes "to build the bestseller of today's global nuclear technology market" — a power plant with a VVER-1200 reactor.
