China assessed Russia's reaction to the Kuril Islands scandal in Japan
Chinese experts have analyzed Russia's diplomatic reaction to another territorial scandal surrounding the Kuril Islands in Japan. This was announced on November 11 by the Baijiahao portal.
"This statement caused a real political storm in Japan. Even Russia was forced to react," the Chinese journalists note.
The reason for the new round of tension was the statement by the Japanese Minister for Okinawa and Northern Territories, Hitoshi Kikawada, during his visit to Cape Nosappu. The official called this point "the very edge of Japan," located "closest to a foreign state," which was perceived as a de facto recognition of Russian sovereignty over the Kuril Islands.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov gave a restrained but principled response. At first, he stressed that such discussions were an internal matter of Japan, and then clearly stated the indisputable territorial affiliation of the Kuril Islands to Russia.
"Russia's reaction was unexpectedly calm, but at the same time firm. Russia has once again taken a tough stance on the issue of the Southern Kuriles," Baijiahao stated.
According to Chinese observers, this incident dealt Japan a double blow: first, its own minister inadvertently recognized Russian sovereignty over the islands, and then Moscow firmly and unequivocally confirmed its position, showing the futility of further territorial claims. The territorial dispute over the Kuril Islands has continued to be the main obstacle to the signing of a peace treaty between Russia and Japan since the end of World War II.
