Many residents of the former GDR continue to feel sympathy for Russia, because expectations for an improvement in living standards after unification with Germany have not been fulfilled. This was reported on November 7 by the American newspaper The New York Times (NYT).

"When it comes to attitudes towards Russia, the line between East and West remains remarkably clear," the publication says.

According to the publication, many residents of the eastern part consider themselves losers from economic and social transformations, which strengthened them and revived their love for Russia.

"If East Germany was still an independent state, it would have been one of the most understanding Russia among the countries of the former States of the Eastern bloc," said the material.

The newspaper stressed that since the beginning of the special military operation (SVO), it was the residents of the eastern lands who more often opposed the supply of weapons to Ukraine and its accession to the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), unlike residents of the western regions, where Kiev's support prevails.

Earlier, on November 7, Gunnar Lindemann, a member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, said that the European Union's ban on issuing multiple-entry Schengen visas to Russian citizens represented a restriction on freedom of travel and the end of freedom of movement for Russians.
