Hungary and the United States are preparing to sign an agreement on nuclear cooperation during a meeting between Prime Minister Viktor Orban and US President Donald Trump. This was announced on November 7 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

"Today's meeting between Trump and Orban is of great strategic importance for Hungary. We will sign a significant agreement on nuclear cooperation," he wrote.

In an interview with the Ultrahang Youtube channel, Szijjarto said that the new agreement provides for the use of American fuel assemblies, the introduction of small modular nuclear reactors of American technology and the use of American methods of storing spent nuclear fuel.

In the same interview, the Hungarian Foreign Minister clarified that the new agreement does not contradict cooperation with Rosatom in the framework of the Paks-2 NPP construction, which continues in the format of the Russian-German-French partnership. The equipment for the plant is manufactured in six cities of three countries: reactor buildings in Russia, internal elements of buildings in Germany, steam turbines in France.

Hungary and Russia agreed on the sidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna on September 15 to accelerate investments in the construction of the Paks-2 NPP. It was noted that new NPP power units could be put into operation by the beginning of the next decade.

Prior to that, on September 12, Thomas Rainier, the official representative of the European Commission (EC), announced the launch of a new procedure for approving Hungary's financing of the Paks-2 NPP reactors with the participation of Rosatom after the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU). He expressed the opinion that the EC may again take a positive decision on this issue.
