18 suspects have been detained in Turkey in the case of betting referees on matches.

The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office has issued arrest warrants for 17 football referees and the president of the Turkish Super League club Eyupspor, Murat Ozkai. This was reported on November 7 by the Associated Press (AP).

After conducting an internal investigation, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) determined that the referees were involved in betting. According to TFF President Ibrahim Hadjiosmanoglu, out of 571 active professional referees, 371 people had their accounts in bookmakers.

152 of these referees were particularly active in betting on matches. One referee allegedly placed bets on 18,227 games. These actions are a direct violation of the rules of the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the European Football Union (UEFA), she added.Газета.Ru ".

The arrests were carried out in Istanbul and 11 other provinces of Turkey. So far, 18 judges have been detained, and a total of 21 arrest warrants have been issued by the prosecutor's office.

On October 31, it became known that the TFF Disciplinary board had suspended 149 referees convicted of betting on football matches. According to the federation, the punishment ranges from eight to 12 months. The investigation is ongoing against three other judges. It was noted that the inspection had been carried out for about five years.
