- The psychologist spoke about the changes in the nature of school bullying thanks to the Internet
Modern bullying is no longer limited to the walls of the school and the courtyard — with the development of the Internet, bullying enters the house through the screen of a phone or computer. On November 7, a psychologist, associate professor of the Department of Legal Psychology and Law at the Faculty of Legal Psychology of the Moscow State Psychological and Pedagogical University (MGPPU) told about this Varvara Delibalt.
Bullying is a systematic and deliberate act of aggression, such as humiliation, bullying, intimidation, or coercion that harms another person. Its essence lies in the unequal distribution of forces (physical, social or emotional), when the victim is unable to independently resist violence. Bullying often remains hidden, which exacerbates its negative consequences.
"In Soviet times, bullying could be localized at school or in the yard. The house was a refuge. Today, bullying enters the house through the screen, and there is no shelter. The pressure is becoming constant," the psychologist explained in an interview with the newspaper.Ru».
According to the expert, cyberbullying is a new form of aggression that retains all the features of traditional bullying, but is being transferred to a digital environment. She stressed that victims of bullying often cannot stop the attacks on their own, and constant pressure leads to stress and deterioration of their emotional state.
The expert recommended that parents pay attention to the warning signs — a change in the child's behavior, isolation, decreased academic performance, complaints of pain and nervous tension when receiving messages.
In case of confirmation of the fact of bullying, Delibalt advises to support the child, help block the aggressor, hide personal information and preserve evidence of correspondence. In difficult situations, it is important to contact law enforcement agencies and the school administration. The psychologist stressed that the main thing is to show the child that he is not alone and can count on the support of adults.
Mikhail Khors, a practicing psychologist, writer, TV presenter, candidate of Psychological Sciences, reported on July 14 that people who have experienced bullying in childhood can turn into broken adults or become sadists.
