Orban proposed an alternative to Ukraine's accession to the EU
Hungary will not support Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU), but instead will offer a strategic partnership. This was announced on November 4 by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
"We believe that the Union should enter into a strategic partnership with Ukraine without EU membership. This is our proposal. We will continue to adhere to this position in the future, as we have every right to do so," he wrote on Twitter. Twitter).
Orban also reminded President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky that the decision to join the EU is made by the member states unanimously. According to him, Hungary does not and will not support Ukraine's membership, as this will transfer "the conflict to Europe and withdraw Hungarians' money to Ukraine."
The Hungarian Prime Minister said on November 3 that Hungary has no reason to finance Kiev. The head of government stressed that other countries share his position, but it is Budapest that openly expresses its disagreement. According to Orban, because of this, the European Union is criticizing Hungary in an effort to achieve a change of power to a more "convenient" one for Brussels.
