A red book whale washed ashore on Sakhalin after a storm
In the Makarovsky district of the Sakhalin region, the body of a dead fin whale about 12 m long washed up on the ocean shore. Ecologist and researcher Sergey Lyubachenko announced this on November 3 in his Telegram channel.
According to him, some of the animal's whiskers have already been cut off, but the carcass is still of interest to scientists. Lyubachenko stressed that he has been monitoring storm surges of marine mammals for three years.
"Such information is of great value, it allows science to assess the condition (death rate) of a particular species, and, if necessary, the opportunity to take the necessary tissue samples for further research," the ecologist said.
Earlier, on September 1, in the Belgian resort town of Knokke Heist, specialists rescued a minke whale stranded on a beach. It was noted that during the work, rescuers dug a kind of pool for the whale, and also covered it with a towel and poured water over it to help survive the time during which the animal remained stranded on the beach.
