In Russia, family law does not restrict relatives who can take parental leave. Svetlana Bessarab, a member of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans' Affairs, said this on Friday, October 31.

"At the same time, pension points and seniority can only be taken into account by working parents — either mom or dad. At the same time, a grandmother, grandfather or any other relative can take part in the upbringing of a child," the deputy said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

Earlier, on October 21, Gennady Kuzmin, lawyer and managing partner of the MKM Law Firm, in an interview with Izvestia, expressed the opinion that the draft law on including the period of child care in retirement without restrictions is a timely and socially significant initiative.

The lawyer noted that the key issue remains determining the minimum length of service before going on maternity leave. Although specific parameters have not yet been approved, six months, one or two years of official work may be possible options.

Senator Natalia Koshikhina announced on September 13 that parental leave in Russia is counted in the length of service, thereby preserving the right to a future pension. She explained that pension points earned during maternity leave are added to those already accumulated for work and directly affect the final pension amount.
