St. Barbara's Day, or the Day of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara, is celebrated on December 17 and is revered as one of the most important Orthodox winter holidays. On this day, believers remember the saint who suffered for the Christian faith and turn to her with prayers for protection from sudden death and misfortune. For more information, see the Izvestia article.

What a day

Saint Barbara was born into a pagan family and secretly converted to Christianity. Upon learning about this, her father informed the authorities, and the girl was tortured. Despite suffering, she did not renounce her faith, for which she was executed. Later, the Church canonized her as a great martyr, and the saint's memory was celebrated on December 17.

Saint Barbara is revered as the intercessor of all who need protection and healing. They turn to her with prayers for the preservation of life, getting rid of troubles, diseases and accidents.

What not to do on Barbarian Day

On this day, it was forbidden to quarrel, utter harsh words and engage in hard physical work. It was believed that any disturbance of peace could attract misfortune.

It was also not recommended to spin, sew and knit — according to beliefs, this could confuse fate or bring disaster to the house. People tried to spend the day in peace, devoting time to prayer, helping others and household chores that did not require labor.

It was believed that if Barbarian Day was celebrated in peace and quiet, the year would pass peacefully, without diseases and worries.
