AP has learned about the investigation into Black Lives Matter executives
The US Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the misuse of donated funds by leaders of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. This was reported by the Associated Press (AP) on October 30, citing sources.
"The Department of Justice is investigating whether leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement deceived sponsors who donated tens of millions of dollars during the protests for racial justice in 2020, according to several people familiar with the situation," the publication says.
At the moment, it is unknown whether this investigation will lead to the initiation of any criminal cases.
According to one of the agency's sources, the investigation in this direction has been underway for several years and was launched under former US President Joe Biden. When Donald Trump was elected president of the United States, he also became interested in the issue of embezzlement of donations by movement leaders.
At the same time, the organization's leaders deny any wrongdoing.
In an emailed statement to the Associated Press on Thursday, the foundation said it was "not the subject of any federal criminal investigation," the publication said.
The Black Lives Matter movement for black people became widespread in 2020, when an African-American man, George Floyd, died during detention. They were going to arrest him for trying to pay in a store with a counterfeit bill. After that, mass protests in support of the black population began in the United States, which also led to riots on the streets.
Subsequently, several police officers were sentenced to prison terms in the Floyd murder case. So, in June 2021, it became known that, by a court decision, ex-policeman Derek Chauvin was found guilty of Floyd's death and sentenced to 270 months (22.5 years) in prison. This verdict was based on an abuse of trust and power by a former law enforcement officer.
In December 2022, former Minneapolis police officer Jay Alexander Keng received 3.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to complicity in manslaughter.
Prior to that, in July of the same year, ex-police officer Derek Chauvin, already serving time in prison for the murder of Floyd, was sentenced to an additional 20 years in prison for violating the victim's civil rights. He is serving his term in parallel with the existing one.
