The history of Russian Mother's Day, despite the seeming age of tradition, is relatively young. It acquired official status only in 1998, when it was established by Decree of Russian President Boris Yeltsin. The initiative came from the State Duma Committee on Women, Family and Youth Affairs, and the goal was to increase the social importance of motherhood and strengthen family foundations. However, the very idea of honoring mothers has deeper roots in the country. Back in 1988, a celebration for mothers and grandmothers was held in Baku, at school No. 228, organized by teacher Elmira Huseynova.
