The NYT reported on Trump's appeal of the verdict in the forgery case.
US President Donald Trump has officially filed an appeal to the New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan in a criminal case of document falsification. This was reported on October 28 by The New York Times (NYT).
According to the publication, the American leader pointed out that the trial was "fatally disrupted," and the jury considered evidence that should not have been the subject of the proceedings. Against this background, the judge who issued the verdict made serious mistakes.
"These charges against President Trump are as unprecedented as their political context," reads the text of the appeal filed by the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell.
In 2024, a jury ruled that Trump had approved a scheme with falsified documents in order to conceal payments to former porn actress Stormy Daniels for silence about an alleged affair with a politician during the 2016 election campaign. Thus, the current US leader allegedly tried to hide violations of the state's electoral law.
"Trump is trying to challenge his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying accounting documents related to payments to Daniels during the 2016 election campaign," the newspaper said.
In January, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of the criminal case of forging the Trump Organization's papers in order to pay the porn actress. Daniels should have kept quiet about the alleged connection with Trump. At the same time, the court refused to sentence him with a prison term or a fine. Judge Juan Merchant ruled to release Trump from prosecution in the case without any conditions. Special Prosecutor Jack Smith, having completed his work on two criminal investigations against the president-elect, resigned.
According to the prosecution, Trump had an intimate relationship with porn actress Daniels in 2006, and in 2016 his lawyer Michael Cohen paid $130,000 in exchange for a non-disclosure agreement. After being elected president, Trump reimbursed Cohen's financial expenses, disguising the payments as legal fees. The total amount of the checks was $420 thousand.
