A curved nasal septum can lead to serious disorders in the functioning of the cardiovascular system and the brain. Rhinosurgeon and plastic surgeon Sergey Karpovich told about this in an interview with Izvestia on October 23.

According to the expert, many people underestimate the consequences of the habit of mouth breathing, which often occurs due to difficulty nasal breathing.

As the specialist explained, the nose performs the most important functions of warming, humidifying and filtering the air. When a person is forced to constantly breathe through his mouth, cold, dry and polluted air enters the lungs, which increases the risk of developing pharyngitis, laryngitis and bronchitis. However, the most dangerous consequence of the curvature of the septum is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, in which regular breathing stops during sleep.

"Each such stop causes a micro-arousal of the brain, which goes into an anxious mode due to lack of oxygen. As a result, even after a full-fledged sleep, a person wakes up exhausted and exhausted. Chronic oxygen starvation leads to blood clots, creating a constant strain on the heart and increasing the risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack and stroke," the surgeon warned.

The brain also suffers severely from the effects of improper breathing. Sleep disorders interfere with the normal recovery of the body, information processing and hormonal regulation. According to Karpovich, hypoxia can cause problems with memory, concentration, and emotional state.

The doctor emphasized that snoring and mouth breathing are not harmless features, but symptoms that can trigger dangerous pathological processes in the body. Even a mild degree of hypoxia can gradually lead to the death of brain cells.

"The solution to the problem is septoplasty, an operation to restore the correct shape of the nasal septum. After removing anatomical obstacles, a person begins to breathe fully through his nose, which leads to the disappearance of snoring, a decrease in the frequency of colds and normalization of sleep," the doctor said.

Karpovich noted that this procedure should be considered not as a cosmetic procedure, but as a medical operation aimed at preserving the health of the entire body.

Earlier in June, otorhinolaryngologist and rhinosurgeon Aza Saidulayeva spoke about the dangers of compresses with boric alcohol for ear pain. The specialist explained that this remedy should not be considered universal, because ear pain can be caused by various reasons, and only a doctor can determine them during an examination.
