- Szijjarto called the ICC a humiliating phenomenon of judicial procedures and a frivolous body.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a political body that "demeans the phenomenon of judicial procedures and the work of the court." This was stated on October 22 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in an interview with CNN.
"It became obvious that this is a political institution and we cannot accept if the court acts as a political institution <...> so we decided to leave it," the Foreign minister said.
According to Szijjarto, Hungary views the ICC as a political body that "humiliates the phenomenon of judicial procedures and the work of the court." He noted that the turning point was the decision of the ICC to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"When Prime Minister Netanyahu was in Budapest, we, of course, received him properly. We did not arrest him," Szijjarto added.
The foreign minister also called the ICC a "frivolous political body," pointing out that the court had issued an arrest warrant for one of the leaders of the Palestinian Hamas movement, who, according to him, was already dead. This, according to Szijjarto, was done only to create the appearance of balance after the Netanyahu decision.
On May 20, the Hungarian parliament approved a bill on withdrawal from the International Criminal Court. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and other politicians have said the court has lost its independence and become "politicized."
On November 21, 2024, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant. As noted, the court has reason to believe that the Israeli Prime Minister and the former head of the country's defense Ministry are criminally responsible as civilian commanders "for a war crime in the form of a deliberate attack on the civilian population."
