Homemade cinnamon rolls are a symbol of comfort and a real feast of taste. Their delicate fragrance with hints of spicy cinnamon fills the house with warmth and comfort. These buns are perfect for morning tea drinking and create a special mood for the whole family. The secrets of making the perfect yeast dough will allow you to achieve amazing splendor, softness and rich taste. Izvestia tells you more about how to easily and quickly cook fragrant cinnamon buns.
The history of cinnamon rolls: who invented fragrant pastries
The history of cinnamon rolls begins in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when, thanks to lower prices for wheat flour and sugar, many new types of sweet pastries appeared. For the first time, cinnamon rolls became widespread in the northern countries of Europe and the USA. One of the most famous contemporaries and inspirers of this baking was the American company Cinnabon, founded in 1985 in Seattle by Rich and Greg Komen. They were looking for the perfect bun — juicy, but without a richly flowing filling, with a rich aroma of Indonesian cinnamon of the Makara variety. Thanks to this invention, buns have gained worldwide popularity as a sweet treat and a symbol of home comfort.
In Sweden, cinnamon bun (kanelbulle) has become part of the national culture and even got its own separate holiday — Cinnamon Bun Day, which has been celebrated on October 4 since 2003. This shows a deep love for this simple but warm dessert that unites generations and traditions.
Ingredients for classic cinnamon rolls
The dough will require 500 ml of warm milk, 25 g of fresh yeast (or 7 g of dry), 100 g of sugar, 2 eggs, 100 g of butter, a pinch of salt and about 800 g of premium flour. For the filling, take 150 g of softened butter, 150 g of brown sugar and two or three tablespoons of ground cinnamon. To lubricate before baking, you will also need one egg or milk, and for the glaze — powdered sugar and a little boiled water or lemon juice.
Step-by-step recipe and special features of dough preparation
The process begins with the preparation of the dough: the yeast is dissolved in warm milk with the addition of a tablespoon of sugar and flour, left in the heat for 15-20 minutes until a fluffy frothy cap appears. This means that the yeast is ready to work.
Then the remaining ingredients are added to the dough: eggs, sugar, butter, salt and gradually add flour, kneading the dough until smooth and soft. It is important not to overdo it with flour so that the finished buns remain airy.
The kneaded dough is removed to a warm place to rise, where it should increase in volume by two to three times. After the first rise, it becomes elastic and smooth, which is the key to baking success.
Roll out the dough into a rectangular layer about 5 mm thick, evenly lubricated with a filling of butter, sugar and cinnamon. Roll into a roll and cut into equal pieces about 3-4 cm thick. The sheet with buns is left for a second rise for 20-30 minutes, after which it is greased with beaten egg for a beautiful golden crust and placed in an oven preheated to 180-190 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
At the end of baking, it is recommended to lightly cover the buns with a towel so that they remain soft and do not dry out. For extra flavor, many add icing of powdered sugar with vanilla and lemon juice — it gives the buns a delicate sweetness and attractive shine.
The secret of perfect cinnamon rolls
The key to success is patience and accuracy. Use only fresh ingredients and do not skimp on the quality of butter and cinnamon. Carefully monitor the temperature of the milk and the fermentation time of the dough so that the yeast works as efficiently as possible. Do not roll out the dough too thinly — it should remain elastic. The secondary rise after slicing the roll gives incredible lightness and softness. Cover the cooled buns with a damp towel to maintain the texture.
Play with spices, add raisins or nuts to the filling, and classic cinnamon rolls will gain new flavors and become your favorite homemade pastry.
